Flower bulb sector pulls out all the stops in late season
The spring of 2013 will go down in history as one of the coldest in the history of weather measurements. It will therefore come as no surprise that the bulb industry is facing a late harvesting season. However, this does have some consequences. Delays in the nursery mean later deliveries to export and retail, which not everyone is happy about.
For the retail sector, it's a simple story, says Gertjan Klumpenhouwer of flower bulb export company Florex. She doesn't care about a cold season. Retailers have planned their promotions, the flyers are already printed, so those bulbs simply have to be in the shops. We're on top of things, maintaining constant contact with our suppliers, with the aim of minimizing delays.
According to Ilse van der Neut of GRS Inkoop, later deliveries mean that the sales period for flower bulbs will be shortened. The same applies to the forcing season, which will start two to three weeks later due to a late Stadium G.
