Luminous road officially opened
OSS – Minister Schultz van Haegen (Infrastructure and Environment) officially opened the much-discussed 'glowing road' near Oss on Thursday evening.
The so-called "Glowing Lines" are part of the Smart Highway concept by artist Daan Roosegaarde, which was developed in collaboration with construction company Heijmans. According to Roosegaarde, the "Glowing Lines" are a good alternative now that, due to budget cuts, highway lighting on some highways is turned off at night.
Paint on the road surface that reacts to temperature and indicates when the road is cold and slippery; and lights along the highway that only come on when cars pass. The possibility of charging cars while driving electrically in a designated lane is also being explored.
This Dutch innovation is being admired abroad. See the video below for more information.
