CO2 reduction – The New Way of Driving – Driving Style Assistant
In February 2013, Van Dooren Transport started the CODE 95 course The New Way of Driving at Hoekstra Verkeersopleidingen in Alkmaar. This training, combined with Trimble's driving style assistant, aims to achieve a 5% reduction in CO2 emissions. The initial findings are positive.
The New Way of Driving
The New Way of Driving (HNR) driving style combines fuel savings (10 to 15%) and safety. Integrating HNR delivers structural cost savings combined with safe and comfortable driving. Our drivers learn to drive energy-efficiently and with a reduced environmental impact.
The following topics are covered during this course:
- The principle of specific fuel consumption
- Fuel-efficient driving style
- Vehicle and driver
- The effects of weather, road conditions, and traffic on fuel consumption
- Anticipatory driving behavior
- Environmental impact
Trimble Driving Style Assistant – Lasting behavioral change
Trimble wants to make things as easy as possible for its customers and continues to develop its CarCube on-board computer, known for its user-friendliness. For example, it has now developed a tool that allows drivers to monitor and adjust their driving behavior in real time. The Driving Style Assistant visualizes several values for the driver, such as speed, engine speed, acceleration, braking, and idling fuel consumption. These parameters are configured to take into account the vehicle type and the permitted or fuel-efficient speed. The driver receives a real-time alert if they exceed the speed limit or if their braking, acceleration, or deceleration do not comply with the predefined values.

Sustained savings
Braking behavior, speed, and gear shifting significantly influence fuel consumption and maintenance. Drivers can adjust and control their driving behavior at any time. This easily saves costs, both on fuel consumption and maintenance. The detailed FMS reports on FleetWorks also provide management with insight into drivers' driving styles. An analysis of driving behavior is illuminating. Short-term and long-term savings are no longer empty words. The Driving Style Assistant complements fuel-efficient driving training. The knowledge gained during the training can easily be tested against real-world conditions, and drivers are motivated to put theory into practice. Moreover, benchmarking based on the "best drivers" fosters team spirit.
Results
The initial results are positive. To ensure a fair comparison, we compared the current months of 2013 with the same months of the previous year. The overview below shows that most drivers saw savings in January/February 2013 compared to 2012.
