TLN | Proposal for retrofitting digital tachographs unacceptable
In the fight against violations and abuse in road transport, the European Commission (EC) wants to introduce a new, "upgraded" digital tachograph. With this tachograph, it will be possible in the future to remotely read data from the tachograph while the vehicle is in motion.
The European Parliament (EP) wants all new and old trucks that are required to have a tachograph to be equipped with this new tachograph (retrofit). TLN finds this unacceptable. TLN supports the approach to offenders, but fears that EU member states will also use this new reading technology to impose sky-high fines for minor violations of driving and rest times. TLN therefore wants the underlying enforcement rules to be addressed first, before new control techniques are introduced.
