Borders open for LHVs
BRUSSELS/THE HAGUE – Longer and heavier trucks should be allowed to cross the border into Europe. That is the opinion of CDA MEP Corien Wortmann-Kool. She points to the many advantages in a study presented on Thursday to the European Parliament's Transport Committee.
"The study's outcome is extremely positive. It addresses many of the critics' concerns," says Wortmann. "I hope this study will persuade the opponents in the EP to allow cross-border transport with these trucks."
The so-called ecocombis are trucks with two trailers or an extended trailer. This allows companies to transport more by road using fewer trucks, reducing CO2 emissions. The study shows that these long, heavy trucks are no more harmful to road safety and road surfaces than standard trucks.
The outcome is a boost for the Dutch transport sector. They already have positive experiences with the eco-combi and are eager to cross-border transport into Europe with it.
EU Commissioner Kallas (Transport) had already championed the eco-combi at the end of 2012. He stated that the vehicles would be allowed to cross the border once member states mutually approved them. "Unfortunately, this hasn't yet been arranged," said Corien Wortmann.
The CDA member hopes that cross-border projects can be launched soon to improve the flow of Dutch exports. The number of eco-combis in the Netherlands is growing rapidly, and there are currently almost 1,000.
