Toll Germany 2024
On October 20, 2023, the German government definitively approved a substantial increase in road transport tolls (Maut). As of December 1, 2023, a separate CO2 tax of €200 per ton of CO2 will be introduced. The proceeds from the Maut will mainly be invested by the German government in the railways (Bundesbahn). This CO2 tax will almost double the toll costs compared to the current situation.
Significant increase in German toll tax finalized
The current toll tax for a 40-ton Euro 6 truck is €0.19 per km. From December 1, 2023, a CO2 tax of €0.158 will be added. This brings the total toll to €0.348 per kilometer. This represents a near doubling of toll costs.
For example: a trip with a Euro 6 truck from the Bulb Region to the Munich area currently costs approximately €270 in toll (Maut). From December 1, 2023, the same trip will cost approximately €490 in toll (Maut + CO2 tax).
In addition to the CO2 surcharge, the toll limit for trucks will be lowered from 7.5 tons to 3.5 tons starting July 1, 2024. This means that lighter commercial vehicles will also be subject to the toll. This will not affect our customers, as we operate >7.5-ton trucks in Germany.
Emission-free trucks are exempt from the levy until the end of 2025. After 2025, these vehicles will pay 25% of the regular rate. This plan still needs to be approved by the German parliament.
Logically, this cost increase will affect our rates and thus the cost structure of our customers. We find it regrettable and incomprehensible that the German government is confronting us with a significant cost increase in the current calendar year.
We will inform our customers as soon as possible about the effect of this cost increase on transport rates.
What will change specifically?
Current situation (until November 30, 2023):

- The criteria for the toll rate are:

- The number of axles of the vehicle (total combination)
- The weight class of the vehicle
- The toll rate is made up of:
- A share for noise pollution
- A share for air pollution
- A share for infrastructure
Situation from December 1, 2023:
- Toll for vehicles with a maximum technical weight of more than 7500 kg
